blog questions technology edition

2025-02-27 @ 17:40 UTC
filed under: meta tech

Matto has tagged me in a blog question challenge, it's a fun game and i'm flattered to have been considered for it :)

i've been dragging my feet getting around to not only writing this post but also doing some work around the website (we have an official 88x31 web button now!), but it's finally getting done!

when did you first get interested in technology?

ever since being pretty much exclusively being raised by computers and the internet, i've been fascinated with what i perceived as a gateway to a new world. soon enough i wanted to be able to participate in that new world and that's how i began to learn programming. to me computers (to an extent, the internet) are first and foremost my entire social life and hobby, but it also has come in handy as a skill i can sell to keep my meatspace avatar afloat.

along with and in the same vein as computers i also became an avid collector of older video game consoles. learning how to maintain them has also been invaluable and over the years the practice of dealing with hardware also evolved into working with hobbyist electronics. i have less catalogued projects to show for that but being able to design and solder circuits can lead to some really fun stuff

what's your favourite piece of technology of all time?

cameras! i am fascinated by all analog and digital means of capturing an optical image, especially in how they differ from each other. i am not at all interested in the pursuit of higher fidelity but rather in each medium's unique artefacts. i'm always on the lookout for new cameras to add to my collection, though unfortunately i've been having less and less opportunities to go out to shoot pictures.

what's your favourite piece of technology right now?

i feel like this is a bit of a weak answer (it's hard to pick one, and the few answers i have none have grabbed much of my time yet actually) but the latest stuff i've been working on:

  • i've recently purchased an ibook g3 which came to me in already near mint condition, i've given it a clean up and gotten it ready to work on modern networks and under its own portable power
  • i've gutted the sensor bar (which is just a few IR LEDs) and the bluetooth module off of our household Wii and adapted both for USB usage. replacing the Wii with emulation (on a computer we already had hooked to the living room tv) has greatly decluttered the entertainment center and made playing games easier to set up for
  • lights! fairy lights are such an easy way to add colorful ambiance to a room, especially when you can get battery-powered ones that can go anywhere. i've been meaning to do more with lighting (portable, wirelessly controllable RGB accents) so i'm gathering components to play with
  • i've finally managed to repair the eyemodule (first gen) for my Handspring Visor, and hopefully there will be more pictures taken with it up on the website

name one cool new piece of technology we'll have in 25 years

honestly i'm not super hopeful for the future for a few reasons and not all of them related to the current doom-ness of it all, but also because i feel a lot of the tech that i enjoy has been progressing at a slower pace towards a plateau than the exciting developments of a decade or two ago.

display technology is something i think i'll be following along closer, e-inks supporting color and higher refresh rates are exciting to see, plus with how they retain an image without needing a power source there's a lot of different use cases. but i think in 25 years we'll have pretty much just variations on what we already have, maybe i'm just not imaginative enough to come up with what else could become commonplace :)

[late edit:] i forgot to mention small-scale boutique stuff. i think individuals making projects and products will come out with way more interesting things than any company will, at this point in time. i don't particularly have anything in mind (Anna reminded me about the tangara but i'll let them speak for it) but usually if it's crowdfunded or open source, it's gonna be something neat

closing words

thank you again to Matto for tagging me in this, and do check out the (hopefully soon expanding) links section in my index page for more friends of the website to browse through!

i'd like to tag the following people to keep the chain going: Anna e só, L. Pereira, dotHTM, vxo

if you haven't been tagged and you'd like to participate, go ahead! i'd like to see more people's experiences with technology :)
